Okay, this has been bugging me, so I'm just going to get it off of my chest.

I think specialties in Exalted are a tad bit too open. I'm not going to change how they work, so there's nothing to worry about; I just find it slightly...painful... to think about.

For example: a Melee Specialty in "Straight Swords" applies to Accuracy rolls with Straight Swords, Parry DVs with Straight Swords, Accuracy rolls with normal Daiklaives, and Parry DVs with normal Daiklaives. I don't have any problem with this - it makes sense.

My problem is that a Melee Speciality in "Swords" is perfectly acceptable. This means that it's perfectly reasonable for someone to use a slim rapier foil in one hand, and a Buster Sword in the other, and... somehow... attack with both at the same time, and... apply the "swords" specialty to all attacks and parries with both weapons... and whenever... whenever I think about this, blood starts coming out of my ears... because my brain is bleeding.

So, yeah... please don't be stupid.

Personally, I'd rather have a specialty in doing things. I'd also like a specialty in using my first specialty. ;)

"fighting multiple opponents".  "from stealth".  "while wearing robes (a dodge specialty given to a certain Abyssal)"

Those are all specialties that show up at least once for NPCs.  Couldn't "while unarmored" count as a May-lay specialty?

yeah... see, it's like I said: a "Swords" Specialty is perfectly exceptable by the rules, it's just stupid. Really, really, REALLY stupid.

The "Against Multiple Opponents" Dodge Specialty actually makes sense to me, because the only time the number of opponents matters is when they are using coordinated attacks.

The Dodge "While Wearing Robes" Specialty is kinda goofy, but I'd be okay with it if it was a bit more clear. "While Wearing Long Loose Baggy Clothing" actually makes sense, though I'd expect a little bit of description before letting it apply against a given attack.

The Specialties that really bother me are the ones involving attacks, mostly because they just get added directly into the Accuracy roll. Part of what makes Specialties balanced is the player has to:
a) remember he has it,
b) figure out how to apply it to the given situation, and
c) ask the Storyteller if his explanation makes sense.

A specialty that's always on isn't a specialty.

So yeah, Specialties like Melee "While Unarmored", Melee "While Armored", Thrown "Sharp Objects", etc... those really hurt my brain. Please don't use them.

I believe it's an improvised weapon in which you put heavy metal bits, like coins or washers into a sock to make a sort of sap or club.

yeah, i've heard of those, but I don't think those are called "sock hammers" so much as "Sock full of Pennies", "Sap", or the like.

It's form of purposeful ambiguity.  A sock hammer could be what Thomas said, or it could be a very general style of fighting.

right, so you'd like to take a melee specialty in "hitting things with things" then?
