MGAOSU 2010–2011
« on: August 20, 2010, 12:06:21 PM »
New school year is coming up. Did the Union finally start allowing student groups to schedule the rooms, or is MGAOSU doomed to die a pathetic death by being stuck away in the classrooms?

Even though I was only there for a about 15 minutes, I can tell you that the Union is just not the same as it was before.  There are a lot of offices and meeting rooms, but they appear to have permanent residents.  There is a food court, but it seems to be all OSU-run stuff; Mark Pi's even moved to the Gateway area.  I think that getting rooms in a building on High Street between 13th and 18th would be better.

That sucks. We used to have a storeroom in the old Union where we kept games and such. It sounds like there is no chance of our getting that back, which sucks for our newbie members who could use the books, games, and other stuff we kept in there.

It sounds like the new Union is objectively worse than the old one. Other than the food court, student groups could reserve up to three rooms at no cost. Someone looking for something to do could go in on a Saturday and check the list of student groups to see what was going on. I would be surprised if we could get anything decent on High St, and I doubt that any of the old alumni, staff, and faculty who gamed would want to come back to classrooms anyway.

I'm not really worried about it at this point myself.  Gaming stores can organize their own groups and leagues (or even help organize CAPCON) in order to survive, and publishers should be doing things to make this easier.  Due to the nature of things, the university has its own interests that it needs to promote.  It would take some effort to sell the club as being aligned with those interests, and I imagine that it will take a back seat to other organizations until that happens.  The Union still very pretty, it has some food in it, it has very nice restrooms, and it is across the street from Chipotle, so it is almost as good as a meeting place.  But it's hard to see why the university should give the club priority when it comes to meeting space.

As one of the old OSUMGA alumni, I would be interested in an Ohio Union meeting place, but I do plan to try and make a meeting at Dreese, just not on a football Saturday.

It doesn't seem like the meetings this year will be moving back to the union.  The only rooms large enough for a full meeting are way too expensive to rent more than once or twice a year and the free rooms only fit about a dozen people max (though individual games meeting in there may work).  It appears that our free options are either Lazenby or the Central Classroom Building.

How many free rooms do we get? In the old Union, student organizations got up to three free rooms. It sounds like they’re providing fewer this time around.

Are we still in Dreese? It would be good to make sure that the website is up-to-date.
