:re cyberware
I have 1.1 of cyberware, and .5 of Bioware.  As I understand the essence rules, I double the 1.1 from the quality, and halve the bioware (see p 84)

1.1 x 2 + .5 / 2 = 2.45

As skills go, I'm probably trying to make too well rounded a character.

My plan is to increase some skills and get specialities from the groups.
(yes they would no longer be groups)

general notes: Shadowrun as a system encourages specialization, because of the many, many options available to characters. It also punishes over-specialization, by making the extremes so costly that you can't do anything else at all.

So, generally speaking, when building a character you should pick either:
One thing that you do really well (13+ dice), 3-4 things that you do okay (6-9 dice), and a few things that you are functional at (4-6 dice).
OR
Several things that you do reasonably well (10-12) dice and a few things that you are functional at (3-6 dice).

For instance, the hacker Technomancer is of the second variety, being reasonably good at data manipulation, cyber-infiltration, and cybercombat, and functional in stealth and influence actions. The troll, meanwhile, is of the first variety, being insanely good at soaking damage and moderately good at melee at melee attacks, melee damage, ranged attacks, and ranged damage, and functional in stealth and intimidation.

For making your character, pick 3-6 things that he can do, decide which he is Excellent at, which he is Good at, and which he is Okay at (but still above average). Then build that way.

Rob, I uploaded a copy of my character spreadsheet. I made the following changes to the spreadsheet itself when creating my character:

  • I converted it to an Open Document Spreadsheet.
  • I corrected it not to charge me for free knowledge skills.
  • I added an entry for Combat Sledge.
  • I added an entry for Ork Ganger.
  • I added a Beer category and put Dwarven Beer in it.

I forgot a big change. I updated the ranged combat penalties to reflect the ones in the 20th aniversary edition. From 4th edition to the 20th aniversary edition, the penalties changed from 0/−1/−2/−3 to 0/−1/−3/−6.
