asking about MTG
« on: April 27, 2010, 01:48:35 PM »
I literally just found this forum not 20 minutes ago, and I was curious if anyone here played Magic The Gathering? I see that you play many other games, mainly RPG's like D&D (which I would love to actually get into, but I've never had the opportunity), but I have not once seen anyone talking/asking about Magic. I would love to find a group that I could meet up with once a week or something to just play with.

I play every now and again, almost mostly my cards (along with all my other CCGs) sit on the shelf waiting and pleading to be played. I think there might be another group that does CCG on campus as its main focus.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure there is, but there is no site or any other information than where they are centrally located. And I'm interested in playing some D&D since I never have before and have always wanted to. But I mainly want to have the ability to play Magic with people I haven't played with and just have a fun time. And especially since a new set just came out, I think it would be a ton of fun.

There should be some kind of Magic club, and I know that I have invited the officers to post here in the past. I don't think anyone ever followed through.

I found the directory of student organizations which may help you in your quest.
If you search 'magic' on there you'll find the Magic club.  Their status is 'Pending'; don't know what that means, but there are some links there for who's in charge of that organization that you could email for more info.

I believe that "Pending" means that someone in the club hasn't done the yearly officer training.

Yeah, I saw that and didn't know what to do. That's why I decided to try this group. I figured that there HAD to be someone who played Magic, and it (at least on the surface) seems like Magic would be included in the games that were played.

Well, I'll ask a contact of mine if he knows of any other good Magic groups on campus, although the information might be a year or two out of date.

Thanks man. That would be greatly appreciated. Like I said, I'd love to find a group to play regularly with.

I know the MTG club was active last year, but I stopped going pretty early on cuz they mostly wanted to draft and my disposable income dried up pretty quick. I would guess if they're still active they're most likely still meeting at the Soldiery, up by High & Henderson, so you could probably go up there sometime and ask the store owner about it. He should be able to tell you when they usually meet, if they're still doing that.

Or if nothing else, I have a couple of friends I play with pretty regularly and we'd be happy to add more people to our playgroup, so you could hit me up on here or shoot me an email (tkdb13@gmail.com) if you want to play with us sometime.

Ah yes, the Soldiery. It's the local Gaming Store for "spend lots of money" type collectible games. Warhammer, 40k, MtG, etc. It's old and battered and a little dingy.

It's also the ONLY Local gaming Store you have a prayer of reaching from capmus without a car. There *THIS* one other, Ravenstone, that you can technically get to, but it's an hour and half or so (due to needing an "crosstown" bus that only runs once an hour), and you've got a 20 minute walk on top of it, so you are better off just asking for a ride (which, incidentally, several of us are willing to provide, if you give us a couple days notice).

Actually, I've been to the Soldiery a couple times. I don't really like it. It's way to expensive in my opinion. I have a card shop back home that's literally a 5 minute drive away and it's way cheaper there. An average box of Magic boosters costs $96 back home, and at the Soldiery it costs over $110. Completely absurd. I try to stay away from that place and just wait until I get home to buy cards or just buy them online. I usually wait for as long as possible though to give the owner of the shop back home some more business cause he's a really cool guy.

One thing I like about The Guard Tower is that they give discounts for spending lots of money (on top of their case discounts IIRC). Unfortunately, I don’t know what their Magic stuff runs, so I can’t comment on how reasonable their prices are.

They are the place to go to for when you get a lot of magic stuff at once, otherwise, if you are just getting a pack or two, I'd go to west point games, which is really close.  Last I recall, they sell single packs cheeper than the guard tower
