Origins 2010
« on: March 11, 2010, 09:52:12 AM »
Is it just me, or is Origins on a screwed up schedule this year? the "pre" day is on a FRIDAY, not a Wednesdy, and it seems to run from Saturday to Tuesday instead of Thursday to Sunday...

EDIT: wait, nevermind. I fail. I was looking at July somehow.

It's still messed up because it's on during the first week of classes for Summer. Grrrrr.

[sarcasm]Oh no, you can only go parts of Thursday and Friday, instead of being able to spend all four days camping in the basement! [/sarcasm]

This is the first time in three years that I will not be more than halfway around the world while Origins is going on.

Seriously, the last two years I've been in Australia on business. Getting there involves flying halfway around the world (which is roughly where Hong Kong is, little farther south) and then flying even farther away to get to Australia; sure, it's technically closer, but no planes fly over the antarctic, so in reality it's more than halfway around the world. Oh yes, and in coach.

I actually get to go this year; I am thrilled!

Heh. For the past 3 years I've had work and school interfere with going any of the days, even just for an hour or two (which would be a waste of money anyway. I look forward to some day far in the future when I can actually attend a full day, never mind the full four days. I can dream, right?

I think I'll be going on Saturday, unless I have to work that day. I won't know until the new schedule for the following quarter is out. I can put in the request to not work that Sat, but we're short-staffed, and going to be more short-staffed by the time we hit that point, so the chances are slim.

Whee! Origins!

What games do you play there? (or ... would you play there if you had the time to go)

I liked the Dread games last year, so jumping in on one of those is a priority for me.  Also I liked the Flames of War game I participated in last year.

Honestly, it's been years since I've been there and played a game properly, and I've only just got back into gaming on a regular basis (and am incredibly glad I have been able to). I've got friends who run a number of games every year and I'd like to get into one or two of them, as well as get my kids in to play one or more of Bill Walton's kid-centric game sessions. I see that Origins hasn't opened up the events yet, so I'm not sure what'll be there.

As for Dredd, I'm old school Dredd, and have loved running the old Games Workshop game in the past. I'd like to try out the new version to see how it stacks up against it. Hell, I'd like to run a game of the GW version if I can get a group of players out who are Dreddheads and know the setting. Half the fun is in the sentencing, after all ;)

From your spelling I'm thinking the 'Dredd' you mention is different from the Dread that I mentioned.

on the topic of kid-centric games: last year I tried out Advanced Dimensional Green Ninja-Educational Preparatory Super-Elementory Fortress 555 last year.  It was -interesting-, and a lot of kids (and adults who acted like kids) were present.  It's game mechanic is candy.  yummy candy...

Oops, aye. But then again, there's no game of Dredd without lots of Dread, especially if you're a perp!

Looks pretty neat, so I'll check it out later. I'm about to start gaming every Sunday morning with my two oldest kids (11 and 8). They've decided they want to start with TMNT (playing mutant versions of their favorite animals: a penguin and a cat), and then we're adding in Star Wars, Ghostbusters and D&D. That is, assuming they get their damn rooms clean and do their housework ;)
