Incoming Student
« on: November 15, 2009, 06:16:31 PM »
Hi.

Jason here.

I'm an incoming junior student for Spring 2010, and am totally stoked to find that there's a gaming group at OSU. I've been out of actually playing for a long time due to family, school and work commitments, but I'm desperate to get back into it. I've been hesitant about trying to get a group going on Sundays because that's really the only day I get to spend with my wife and kids. I also work at Columbus State in the evenings weekdays 5-8pm, Fris 2-6pm and occasional Saturdays until 4:30pm, but I usually have those mapped out a quarter at a time (although with the move to semesters in the future that's going to be interesting...). The fact that you guys meet most Saturdays (and other days by arrangement from what it seems) is a godsend. Finals week is about to hit us just after Thanksgiving, but I plan on taking Winter Quarter off from classes for the transition to OSU. That, and it'll be the only quarter I'll have off for about 2 years as I finish my degree at OSU, before hopefully heading down the post-grad route.

Many moons ago, I used to run a lot of Star Wars D6, Rolemaster (Shadow World mostly, including a 2 year 10 hour weekly sessionc campaign), Shadowrun, Call of Cthulhu and a number of other games. I've been steadily collecting again lately, but want to get back into things by playing for a while before getting back to GMing.

Any room for an older (under 40 but still with decent DEX) ex-pat Scot who does a mean impersonation of Sean Connery as a drunken dwarf in any upcoming games? I'm open to playing just about anything.

Well, next quarter I'm hoping at least one of the games I'm in will be moved to Saturday, from sunday. The GMs are myself and Combat Panda (Fred).

I will either be running Three Intertwined Tales of Vengeance (using the VAR system - drunken dwarves with Scottish accents are not only welcome, but encouraged), or if one of the players who has the main "role" still has trouble, maybe I'll run a D20 future game (with psionics).

When Fred runs, he runs D&D 3.5, usually Eberron or his own setting which borrows heavily from Eberron (Entrophia).

Both Entrophia and VAR have boards here.

Jims,

Thanks for the prompt reply. I'll check out the threads for those. I've got a lot of D&D 3.5 material but haven't really played it, and would like to get into doing so.

How often do you guys generally meet, and at what times?

active games at the moment are the VAR game, a couple 4th edition games, and a paranoia game and a 3.5 eberron game that are just starting up.

That's not counting all the additional games that are going on in random places on campus and just not posted here, and also not counting the (ILLEGAL) additional gaming clubs that are on campus.

(seriously though - there are several additional clubs, including a D&D club and MtG club, that really should not exist - they violate the "only one club per hobby" rule. Besides, we would ALL be better off if we combined our groups together - more players = more games = WIN.)

We typically meet once a week. I've found that (due to holidays), fall is always hard, so we've only met two or three times this quarter.

Last year we played 7p-10/11p on friday nights
This quarter we are "supposed" to play 1p to 6p on Sundays.
I believe most of use are pushing for a Saturday schedule next quarter (probably 1p to ???, but it may start later).

Due to my own work and school commitments, I'm pretty much barred from doing anything else apart from breathing until the second week of December, but I'd love to get in on some gaming in the New Year. The bad thing about working at the Testing Center at CSCC and having enrollment jump 17-20% every quarter for the past year is that we're understaffed and overworked, so I'm working extra Saturday shifts this quarter. I don't intend to do that going forward, because I want to remain sane as well as focus on classwork. Friday nights would be workable as well, as I work to 6-6:30pm in Dublin, but can get onto campus easily enough.

What's the average group size?

As far as I know, all usurper clubs are defunct.

No, but their organization’s website is mostly broken, their forums are offline, and their info page lists no meeting locations. I believe they have a Facebook group, but I’ve never bothered to check it out.

The most irksome thing about GFA is that it was started by people who were aware of MGAOSU and had attended some of our meetings. Mike, Thomas, Darla, and I even played in their short-lived D&D game.

Mike tried contacting them, but I don’t think he ever got a response.

[...]What's the average group size?

With the games i mentioned, the group sizes vary from 3 or 4 players to maybe 6. We usually don't meet on campus (between campus and Dublin, Fred's, for most games), and we probably won't be running any of the games I mentioned on a Friday, due to some conflicts.

I even asked the leader if he would be willing to merge and take over, but even that did not get a response.

Groovy (I'm from the U.K. so I can get away with saying that). I've spoken to the wife and she'll let me out to play, especially if I have Sundays locked for family time as much as I can.

I'm planning on starting a 4e game in the Dark Sun setting, but now that they've announced that there will be official material for the setting in August, I can't quite decide whether or not to start the game yet.

Other than that, welcome to OSUMGA!

I even asked the leader if he would be willing to merge and take over, but even that did not get a response.

When, I was under the impression he was having a lot of health problems for quite a while, and didn't respond to anyone. Also, talking to some friends who were in the club, they said that it fell apart, and this club didn't interest them as much.

I have only shown up for one meeting for MGA to be fair, but I did like the GFA meetings quite a bit better. From what I've heard (and then saw at the MGA meeting), it's one (maybe two) group(s) of people playing a game, (and I think a long standing one).

It'd be nice to have another set of meetings (MGA-Lite?), starting with a relaxed gaming discussion, followed by the crowed splitting into several one-shot games.

Oh, now you've opened a whole nother can 'o worms. You see, my friend Nizz absolutely *loves* any accent from the U.K., and she will never forgive me if I don't tell her about a game you are in. The problem is, the games tend to have occasional profanity and vulgarity (without any form of U.K. accent, which would make it acceptable to her), which tends to get her a bit put off.

Maybe I should just invite her over to my house to watch Top Gear and Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares.
