D20 Future game: Invasion
« on: October 29, 2009, 11:47:09 AM »
I'm going to be running a Sci-Fi (D20 Future) game with some psionic elements (my own psionics system). Anyone interested in joining?

The general points are here

I took a gander through the background info you posted, and I'd love to get in on this. When do you think you might start it?

Actually, since it's been so hard to get people together, managed to pull a last minute group together, monday, 6PM is what I'm looking at.

Also, do you read much sci-fi for fun? Recognize "demarchy"?

Bugger. I work until 8pm on Monday nights, barring any federal/state holidays that are observed, in which case I get the entire day off. Ah well.

I haven't read a lot lately, but I grew up on sci-fi. The Dune series, Robots series, Foundation, Lensman and many others have been staple faves of mine for years. These days I've been reading John Scalzi, Robert Charles Wilson, Cory Doctorow and China Mieville.

Isn't demarchy when the general population gets to take random positions of power? Ruling by lottery? Kinda like what happened in the movie Idiocracy? <grin>

Well, my number is 614-571-7876, we'll be playing at a place just off of Olentangy, between North Broadway and Ackerman.

Yeah, that's Demarchy. I didn't realize it was used elsewhere - I actually got it from a series of books by Alister Reynolds. You'd like them, the spell armor and color with a 'u' :-P.

I live in Lewis Center, and either take 315N or 71N depending on day and traffic patterns when finishing work. How soon are you going to start? I'd feel crappy being late and messing with the game, but I wouldn't mind at least dropping in and getting to know you guys and see the game run.

Pohl and a few others have used it in the past as well. It's really the original form of democratic government that used to be run in Greek city-states in years past. It's truly democratic, but really a bad idea in practice, cos that'd mean people like me could be given the chance to run things, and that's a terrible idea.

The game probably won't start before 7PM at the earliest. The group will have to create characters, and I'm the only one moderately familiar with D20 Modern/Future. If you come with a character, you should be able to jump in fairly easily, Character creation rules are on the page, where different from the books (Human, Frell, Moreau (modifications described on the page), and Android are available).

Background: I like a bit of a story for people's characters, the basic idea, is that, for whatever reason, you have about a month of time in which you can take a vacation to Quii, and you board the interstellar passenger liner Dragon-6 to go on this trip, leaving from Earth or the fueling station at Sirius (it's a HUGE station and interstellar commerce hub - think Babylon 5 on steroids, but with fewer races)...

Have you seen the politicians we come up with around here? And to think of it, most countries don't really do much better than us - I don't see how it can be a lot worse.

I always had trouble getting into Pohl.

D20 Modern and Future are two of the books I haven't quite got around to picking up yet, although I've been meaning to get around to it. Every time I've been ready to I've found some OOP WEG Star Wars D6 book that I didn't have and so I've picked them up instead. Might have to just go and see if HPB have copies hanging around. I managed to pick up Dragonstar not so long ago from there for pretty cheap. That's been added to the selection of sci-fi games I've got, want to play, but might not get around to. Others include StarDrive, Babylon 5 and Legionnaire: Renegade Legion. Speaking of which I need to make an updated list of the games I own for own reference.

Sadly, I left Scotland just as Proportional Representation was put in place for the Scots government. The major issue is that the Scots govt is still tempered by the English one, and by the EU, which makes some of those stupid decisions and rulings I've ever heard.

The American political system has lots of issues, and won't be fixed until three things happen: get rid of the electoral college, the removal/excising of lobbying groups, and the removal of businesses as a person status. Not that any of those are likely to happen. Oh, and U.S. politicians really need to learn from U.K. politicians in how to make snide comments towards each other and get away with it. I miss me some House of Commons snidery.

He's one of the harder to read sci-fi authors. Like many others that developed at the same time, his work is heavily science-based and his prose isn't flowing as some more recent authors. The perils of being one of the trailblazers I suppose. I've always chosen Niven over Pohl.

If you're not read any John Scalzi, you're doing yourself a disservice. Oh, and Amazon have a bunch of sci-fi books for free available via Kindle for PC/iPhone/iPod etc. I've made sure to snag those.

My major reading right now is George R R Martin's A Song Of Ice And Fire series. They're making a miniseries of it, so I've finally made my way through the first book to the end (in the car). I really should finish the other four non-Martin books I've got in various stages right now before I sit down and read the second in the series, although I'm kinda tempted to continue listening to the audiobook versions of the books. Mind you, if I do, this sets back my podcast listening for about 3 months.

HPB on Lane, North High, and Bethel do not have either. The only game store in columbus that *might* is The Soldiery, and I cannot in good conscience recommend people buy anything from that store (as anti-piracy as I normally am, I'd rather see someone show up with a laptop and a PDF).

Is that the B5 in the big books? I was wondering how that game would play, saw the books at The Guard Tower, and it looked interesting.

I'd also suggest a legislative branch style of election similar to Germany, and an executive election style similar to France...

I've read a lot of heavily-science based authors (Alistair Reynolds was an ESA astronomer, and his writings are technically fairly sound, when not considering biology). It's his descriptive style I think.

Niven would be a *LOT* better if he ditched the lame, gratuitous sex scenes. At least, unlike Piers Anthony, they don't involve children... But I digress.

I was running low and about to start on Pratchet and Vonnegut... I'll at Scalzi to the list. I don't have any of those readers, and have no interest in buying any of them (well, PC, but I usually read on the bus). However... Abount the only thing I haven't been able to find here is Asimov's Universe.

If you meant the one by Mongoose for d20, then yes. I've also got a copy of The Babylon Project from years back. Every now and again I find myself coming back to B5. Damn fine sci-fi. Although I'm pissed at JMS because he didn't go further than the second series of Jeremiah (which is a fine setting to play in as well).

I don't get to either the Soldiery or Guardtower as much these days as I like to. I avoid the other one off 161, Ravenstone Games. The few times I've been in there I've felt like I'm invading some sort of secret club; it's darn cold when you go there. You expect to at least be greated when you walk in, especially if you walk in with two kids that are 8-10, talking about some stuff that you're looking for that you want to buy. Needless to say, I didn't buy from there.

Might have to end up getting those online. I've been really grabbing stuff on clearance at HPB lately because the stuff that's been landing there has been OOP print stuff that I used to have or have been meaning to collect.

That would work pretty damn nicely, although you still run into issues of one group possibly claiming control of the majority through allegiances and behind-scenes-chicanery. Ah. I love the smell of politics in the morning. Mostly cos my sinuses are clogged and I can't smell it.

What was your major, just out of curiosity?

They say that people should write what they know, but some people like to write what they don't know and can't get.

Scalzi does throw in some sex at the beginning of Old Man's War, but there's a sound reason for it. Scalzi's also a creative consultant on the new Stargate: Universe series.

I think I was 8 years old when a neighbor introduced me to the Foundation series. It was he that got me really started in sci-fi and he kept recommending books to me. I ended up moving away and lost contact with him, but we eventually met again through another friend who was in my RPG group. It ended up being me recommending stuff for him to read, and I managed to get him hooked on Dune (or at least the first 3 books because after 3 they get a bit dodgy).

Genetics and Computer Science.

[...] Scalzi's also a creative consultant on the new Stargate: Universe series.

Please tell me that's not intended as a plus for his books. That Sci-Fi soap opera could be good, but is too... soap-opera.
