New Player
« on: October 09, 2009, 10:26:22 AM »
Hey if you didnt guess i was the guy who played John on 10/3 at the club. My roommate, the guy who played the rouge, has decided d&d is not for him and wont be playing with us again. However my other friend, Kelly (who has experience playing) is back from her trip home for the weekend. She has a warlord character that she would like to play. As a curiousty, where and when are we playing next? Also, if you want to talk to Kelly, her email is kellhovinga2.0@gmail.com

I believe the next session for this game is 10/17 at noon at my place.

You should encourage your friend to sign up for the forum. It's the primary way we communicate about this game.

Unfortunately, there aren't any email obfuscator plugins that work with the version of SMF we use.

I've sent you the address via PM. If you and your friend need a ride, then I'm sure someone should be able to give you a ride.

She has a warlord character that she would like to play.
Excellent!  Is the warlord tactical or the other type?

[EDIT:]
oh; I got confused with game sessions and characters.  nm

Tactical. And I've already figured out the buses to get there, but a ride back would be much appreciated

One last thing. If im going to be a tank, i'd much rather bring back my dragonborn paladin. I have a complex story worked out behind him that i feel i could play better than a fighter in a can, so to speak

I suggest you read the campaign setting material before bringing in an old favorite character. This isn't exactly a standard setting.

Making a new fighter is fine, but you should take into consideration the state of the campaign.  Also, you should take into account the fact that your friend will be playing a tactical warlord in a group with no other melee characters.

Helpful party summary:

Fighter in a can, our one and only tank.

Shaman, our only current healer. Ranged heals and 'melee' healing checks, with Spirit Bear Companion being mobile offensive force (that interacts strangely with rules).

Warlock, ranged damage with some control.

Last session, we added one permanent character - Wizard. Ranged control with some damage.

We also had a guest Rogue, who apparently is not coming back, and our Invoker has been MIA for a rather long time.

We need a meatshield of some sort, either from our fighter in a can or a new fighter. After that, any role could be useful, but some classes fit with our current makeup better than others.

Here's my personal, Ranged Damage perspective: A class that lets the group as a whole do more damage (either by attacking or by letting the two ranged damage hit harder / more often) would be helpful. A class that can pin down or herd enemies, to keep them from hurting us and shutting us down, would also be helpful. A class that can do both would be ideal.

Fighter in a can, our one and only tank.
Defenders in 4e are not directly analogous to tanks in MMOs like WoW. A Defender who takes all the hits will quickly find himself without any healing surges. I think Mike put it best when he said it’s the job of the Defender to make sure that every decision the enemy can make is a bad one.

I don’t think Josh is going to be a regular player.

Paladins are defenders too. However, they are the least effective Defender class currently available (without using material from Divine Power).
