Balasar Silverbreath

Sir Balasar Silverbreath, Bringer of the Great Age of Dragon Justice and First Knight of Agatas

Balasar is a Dragonborn devotee of Bahamut who has learned the basics of the silver dragon's way of fighting.  Wielding dual dragon teeth (gifts from his adopted parents), his strikes and blocks carry the elemental power of his dragon blood in addition to his prodigious physical might. He is aggressive, showy, and prone to fast action, but he has a subtle cowardly side that comes out when he finally realizes that he is getting in over his head.  Due to his upbringing, he is convinced that dragons are superior to all other mortal beings, especially metallic dragons.  Of all metallic dragons, of course silver dragons come closest to the ideal set by the Platinum Dragon, and silver dragons that have mastered other elements besides cold are even closer.  He thus demands that an appropriate level of respect be given to all dragons (including dragonborn) and he tolerates no offense against Bahamut.  (Saying or writing the word "Bahamut" is an offense against Bahamut, and I will randomly create new ones approximately whenever I feel like it.)

Balasar's mastery has only progressed to the stage where he has mastered fire in addition to cold.  If he does manage to master the other elements (lightning/thunder, acid, and poison).  He respects Chalk as a natural-born (though less talented) user of acid and a warrior who acts in the same spirit as he does.  Others he judges based on their bravado in battle and their ability to harness elemental forces.

Core Motivation: Balasar loves Justice.  He has been raised by dragons to devote himself to the god of all good dragons.  He sees crusading against evil as the purpose of his training, and he doesn't like to let anything get in the way of his pursuit of that goal.

Description: Balasar is a tall and oddly colored dragonborn.  Unlike any other known dragonborn, Balasar's scales are silver.  Balasar's dragon nature, as well as his dragon soul, combine to make the air around him significantly cooler.  When impassioned, cold steam billows from his mouth, frost may form on the ground around his feet, and steam might trail away from his body.  Balasar wears a long purple robe with a large symbol of Bahamut emblazoned on the back (the robe carries a minor enchantment that prevents it from wearing out or getting dirty).

History Balasar was born to poor dragonborn parents who made a hard living farming mushrooms in the mountains.  His egg was laid during especially tough times, but his parents were determined to pull through.  That's when the hobgoblin raids started.  Desperate, the family packed up their things and moved high up into the mountains.  Through good fortune, they stumbled upon the lair of the silver dragon Agatas.  She welcomed them in, and took them on as servants.  When Balasar hatched, Agatas immediately noticed the strange coloration of his scales.  Remembering back to the days of her youth during the Arkosian empire, she realized that this child might be the key to restoring that empire (with her at its head).  She offered the two new parents a great sum of gold and honored positions in exchange for adoption, and they readily agreed.

Balasar grew up as a sort of dragon monk.  He was taught to harness his inborn powers from the first time he coughed up cold.  In order the fulfill the prophecy, Agatas knew that Balasar would have to learn all the forms of dragon magic that the Platinum Dragon is said to know.  Unfortunately, Agatas had never been able to use any power other than cold breath.  Fortunately, the prophecy showed another way.  The prophecy of Arkos speaks of the ten dragon avatars, each of whom is said to possess a small spark of the original divine essence of Io.  Collecting those essences would be enough to cause Balasar to manifest the other elements.

So Agatas spent some of her massive hoard to build a great dragon temple in the mountains.  Dragonborn, as well as dragon disciples of other races, flocked to this temple from miles around.  Fortune smiled upon Agatas, and the red dragon avatar was among one of her many disciples.  She performed a discrete ritual, and soon Balasar was manifesting the power of fire and the red dragon avatar was (willingly; she did not wish to carry a spark of Tiamat) rendered an ordinary dragonborn.  A few other avatars have arrived over the intervening years, but proved slightly more resistant to having their powers thus lessened.  As the silver dragon avatar, Balasar knows that he must eventually fight these other avatars to attain his full power, for killing them is the only sure way for him to gain their divine sparks.

At the temple, all of the people placed their hopes and expectations for the future on Balasar's shoulders.  As the Bringer of the Great Age of Dragon Justice, it has long been expected that he would do Bahamut's will in the world, even if his apparent understanding of doctrine was rather limited.  Knowing nothing else, Balasar has already started on his first crusade.

Knights of Agatas The elites of Agatas's temple have formed a knightly order which seeks to emulate the same ideals that Balasar is supposed to hold.  It is made up primarily of dragonborn, with a few members of other races thrown in.  All of the highest ranking members have had large sections of their bodies tattooed with silver ink, which means that a few other dragonborn with silver scales are running around the area.  Balasar, not to be outdone, went through a special paining ceremony whereby he got to experience the pain of having his entire body tattooed without having to have his scales marred.

One member of this order is an Eladrin warlord named Aramil, who has been assigned by Agatas to be Balasar's "tactician."  Due to the personalities of each of the two, Aramil has become equal parts handler, lackey, and controller.

That is a seriously excellent write-up!

For those wondering what I meant about "ties" and "contrasts", this is great example.

Edit: To what extent are you planning to integrate the other element types into your character development as you increase in level?

While this could be the "first crusade" before you set out to fight the other dragonborn avatars for their sparks, it would be nice if I could integrate the prophecy with this adventure path. However, I need to read over the rest of the published modules, which unfortunately haven't yet reached the epic tier yet, before I can say definitively how much I can do.

It doesn't need to be an epic thing.  My character will eventually learn some thunder and lightning spells, and maybe some acid ones, so the spark integration could come as a part of that.  There's also the possibility of making the sparks turn into magic items or boons in some way.

I thought of a better way to handle the dagger upgrade.  Instead of a scroll, let's say that one of the sarcophogi actually contained the mummified remains of the white dragon avatar, along with its spark.  Its power flowed into Balasar himself, but currently he can only express it through his dragon tooth dagger.  This raises an important question: why would this dungeon contain the corpse of one of the dragon avatars?  Perhaps the forces we are fighting also seek to collect the essence of Io to forge an empire, only with some other aspect dominant.

So far this means that Balasar has three sparks:

Silver: the cold force of justice
Red: the fiery blossom of destruction
White: the power that freezes all things

One thing I screwed up is that the alters in the first room (just north of where we stopped) are not dedicated to the Raven Queen (only the one to which Mirtala is tied), but they are instead altars to Vecna that appear to have been rededicated to Bane by the hobgoblins. I’ve also missed noting the inscriptions that have been written about the families to whom the crypts you’ve gone through belong (since they’re not part of the flavor text), but I’ll detail those in the current adventure thread later today.

The sarcophagus where you obtained your frost power contained a mummified part of a dragon (probably a hand). Think Hand of Vecna, but one of the dragon avatars instead. The people who once owned this castle appear to have once been powerful and influential, for the inscription that circles the chamber reads, “Here lie the Rivenroars until the Day of the Black Sun. If you seek their monument, look at the lands around you.”

If they're originally altars to Vecna, that's much more sinister than Raven Queen iconography.  On the other hand, maybe that means that there are magical secrets hidden nearby.

The thing I got confused about was that the one in the southern chamber is dedicated to the Raven Queen while the ones in the Riverroar burial chamber was dedicated to Vecna before being rededicated to Bane by the hobgoblins. I assumed they would all be dedicated to the same diety.
