Believe what you will, but I really like zone setup, aggressive use of combat tactics, and the ease with which balanced encounters (and even monsters) can be created.  The DM toolkit that came with the game makes setting up a dungeon with a few invented monsters and a controlled difficulty level about as time consuming as thinking up a plot for a low-combat session of a WoD game (not counting mapping time).

I tried to DM 2nd ed back in the day.  In the end, we made changes to that that turned it into something that looked more like 4th edition (this was about 10-15 years ago) without the tactical play.  Encounter and monster design were difficult.  I haven't kept my 2nd ed books around, except my favorite one: The Complete Book of Villains.

I've never tried to run 3rd edition and we always started over before reaching 10th level.  Given how much wanding was going on and how many feats people used to get extra attack types, it was like an amped up version of the custom rules I used before, only with certain classes being completely broken (druids and monks).  I'm not sure how difficult encounter and monster design were, but most battles I remember being either quite easy or resulting in a near-death (or death) experience that required the party to go home for a bit.

meh.

I'm up for AD&D, 3rd ed, 3.5, 4th, Star Wars revised, Start Wars Saga, D20 modern, or WoD d20.

When and where might you want to play?  Randy's game is going biweekly-triweekly now, so I have some open RPG time.

weekends are good.

evenings too, i suppose, though i need to go to bed by 11:00 in order to function properly the next day. It's sad.  I can stay up as late as I want, and buy pretty much whatever i feel like, but if i don't act mature and show restraint then I risk losing all that.

Randy's game meets on random Saturday afternoons, usually 1-2 times a month.  Saturday afternoons avoiding those times would work for me (especially if we could convince Randy to join and let us use his gaming-modified basement).  Other than that, I am usually free on Sunday afternoons.  I no longer have the table and chairs required to host at my apartment, however, and I don't know about rooms on campus.

If you want me to be the DM, it has to be 4th edition.  I'm willing to play 3.5, but not if we are going to be powergaming and using a bunch of broken supplements.  I try to make most of the battles stressful but winnable, and I only killed the party once in the last campaign (I fudged one death roll and the party ended up winning, so it was close).  I'm not afraid of using complicated plots and battle strategies, but I am a little afraid of using existing campaign settings.

I'd definitely be down for a game although im not looking to DM.  I don't really know the rules for anything but 4th ed. but i have browsed the rules for the star wars game.  I am interested in playing anything though as long as you guys are willing to teach me.

I’d be interesting in joining because once every so often is definitely a lot less than I would like to play. I’m available Sundays until 8-ish, Monday and Wednesday evenings, and Saturdays when I’m not running.

My preference would be for 4e (due to having access to most of the *books and D&D Insider), but I would be willing to play in a 3.5e game.

Do you want to make a new forum for this then?  I will try to run a game this time.  I'm thinking of going for 4.0 in a homebrew campaign.  For my current idea I will need one person to play Warlock, preferably Star pact.  I am going to add a few custom feats that deal with switching the attack stat on powers and hiding the fact that a character has special powers (which will otherwise be extremely obvious).  Good character backgrounds and concepts will turn into in-game bonuses, and I have an experimental stunt system I want to try out.  I don't care if anyone decides to use a class from an official supplement, but I need to have a copy of the class information first (but no way is anyone using that awful musketeer class from Origins).

I'm sorry you had such a terrible experience when you played 4e.

It seems like a reasonable idea to me, but you’ll need to PM Thomas to let him know that you want a new subforum and what it should be called since I can’t actually create them.

Anything else we should know when creating our characters?

My initial inclination is to go with a leader or controller class. I’ve been playing defenders in the last two campaigns, and I’d like to try something different, though if no one else wanted to play the warlock, I would be willing to do that.

I'm sorry you had such a terrible experience when you played 4e.

in other words: HAVE YOU actually played it?

I agree in that 4th ed is NOT D&D. they threw out too much of the SETTING. changing the rules is fine, but dumping 30 years of history means its not the same game.

that said, 4th ed IS a very good table top RPG. If you haven't tried it, you shouldn't dismiss it out of hand.

Anyway, I was actually thinking about going with a warlock. 4th ed warlocks feel like warlocks (unlike certain other classes, such as wizards). I wouldn't mind playing one.

i'd either play a gnome bard or a deva invoker depending on what the party needs.
