Looking for a Game (esp. in WI 09)
« on: November 23, 2008, 09:00:49 PM »
I've been at OSU for a while now and decided I should get out and start socializing more.  And since I'm a nerd, finding a game seems the way to do that.  So I'll cast my line and see what bites.

I've been gaming for a little over a decade now and I'm fairly familiar with a few systems:

D20 (3rd, 3.5, Pathfinder passing familiarity with 4th).  I'm a fairly big fan of Eberron.

oWoD (vampire, mage, passing familiarity with werewolf).

nWoD (vampire, mage, werewolf, changeling, promethian, mortal, mortal+/hunter).

Exalted/Scion (not super familiar with these but I'm a quick study).

And as said just above, I'm a quick study and can pick up on a new system fairly quick if there's a book available to reference.

Unfortunately, my schedule in winter quarter is going to be miserable.  I had a poor registration window this quarter and got stuck with night classes Mon-Thurs, which will basically stomp all over weekday schedules.

Friday-Sun is fairly open though.

I'm up for just about anything, I mostly just want to get a little table-top play in with some cool people.

Thanks for reading.

there's a (NWoD) Changling game that will theoretically be on every Saturday, though I'm not the one running it.

I could do new Changeling.

Though it might help to specify:  I'm primarily interested in D&D (esp. 3.5/Pathfinder), Mage, Scion and Exalted.

I'm also generally interested in learning new systems.  If there's a game out there that isn't on this list then I'm up for playing if the group can tolerate a generally new player.

If there's a meeting on the saturday before finals I was planning on stopping by to trawl for a possible game.

I would love to play Mage (tAw)!

I cannot find anyone willing to run, though. I've got ideas, and they've been growing and pushing for a while now, but I really don't have the time to run a proper game.

At least, I don't think I have the time. It's been a year since I tried, but then, that one failed after 2 sessions...

I don't know. I'm definately up for Mage. I like the Changeling game, don't get me wrong, but Mage would be better. It' conceivably possible that I might try running come January.

Damn!  I so want to play Mage, but I'll be out of the country starting then.  I think I'm like the only person who actually wants to play Thyrsus.

I know nMage very well, but unfortunately I just won't have time to really run games for the foreseeable future.  I have to take 20 hours for a few quarters to kind of catch up on things and that just slogs me down in the extreme.

But I would certainly play a mage game if it fit my schedule.

Well, I've got a pile of SAS, so I could run quite a bit with a relatively small amount of prep. I could do Mage or mixed NWoD; either is fine with me, as long as the party is cohesive.

I'm not exactly agreeing to run just yet, but I'm definately thinking about it.

...yeah.

that one failed after three sessions.

It's not a question of "can I come up with material to tell a long term story?" that's not a problem. I was the DM for my D&D group for all of high school, and DMed most quarters during college. I ran a single campaign for three quarters with an eight-person party, and aside from a single railroading incident and the standard Spring Quarter difficulties, everyone had lots of fun. I can run a game, and run it well. I know that.

For me, the problem is prep time. The reason I did so well was by preparing. I generally didn't railroad. I built events which were driven by characters with motives and goals, so even though I was fairly certain what the party would do and how they'd do it, I could adapt and grow the story when they surprised me. But, doing that requires Prep Time. For a six to eight hour game (yes, they went that long), I spent 16-25 hours each week preparing. I didn't mind doing that; in fact, it was fun. I miss it. But I don't exactly have that kind of time any more. I might be able to find it, but the last two times I tried, it fell apart on me. Which sucks.

Whoa, 16–25 hours prep time would (and did) burn me out. I tend to prefer minimal prep time supplemented with improvisation. The times where I did put the extra time in planning things out never seemed to go all that well.

This is why I run Paranoia games with 16-25 minutes of prep time.

I seem to recall that we tended to die a lot though...

If people aren’t dying a lot in Paranoia, I’m not trying hard enough.

I thought that was just any game you played in general.
