Session 3
« on: October 28, 2008, 11:31:31 PM »
Session 3 picks up with our adventuring team sailing north on the Catamaran "Sapphire", after picking up the young mysterious mermaid hitchhiker Serena. The Maenad Liam Jian warns that the way north will become more dangerous and inhabited by the 1/2 blood port towns, and perhaps even their trade and war frigates.

Our next session Is Tuesday November 11th, however if the group would like I'd be happy to do a long weekend session on a saturday(after football) or sunday.

I guess I could pull it off Sat, though I'd rather work on stuff for my system. I can tell you Whitney will likely not be able to make it.

Quick Q: If we do well enough on the board stuff, can we get the 200XP needed to get to 3 before the next game (that way we don't have to level during the game?)

Homework:
It looks like I'm the group treasurer/quartermaster.

As far as a group name - I go for "Wisp" or "Zephyr", since we seem to mostly be a quick/agile group.

For the NPC stuff, I'll probably ask Liam about his youth, what type/size cities the maenad have, and after that ask if, how likely it would be to find maenad to hire to help explore Vhem (though not right now, once we get better equpped and skilled).

You are 90% away from the next level.(3)  Not 200xp! :P

John is 30% away from next level. (2)

OK, so we are doing % instead of XP for the moment (or the entire game) for levels?

Apparently November 11th is school holiday and all the buildings will be locked, meaning we will probably have to play at my house. I can take 3 people or 4 if they feel like getting cozy back there.

I'm not 100% sure if the physics lounge will be locked or not...

If anybody knows anything please let meh know.

We could see if Whitney could snag a key.

maybe we could start/finish earlier in the day?

What'd Liam say to my comments/questions above?

Liam tells you that the Maenads are a nomadic sea faring race, they get itchy feet on land if they stay too long in one spot.

They setup tiny fishing villages at various spots in the archipelago and stay for a few months while the fishing is good. His people have a tiny flotilla of ships, maybe 30, with 10 of them being stouter vessels (Schooners,Frigates,Barques, Brigantines) also The Vhem's corruption seems to end about a quarter mile off the northern coast of the continent.

There building's are primarily composed of bits taken from their boats, or actual shanty's that they Detach from their ships. It takes about 3 days for the maenads of his tribe to setup town once they pick a spot, and they can pick up and move just as fast. The maenads are a zero trace group and they leave a spot exactly how they found it. His tribe, the star whisperer's are unusual compared to the other few dozen or so because they have a monastic tradition and seem to produce unchained with more frequency. Most Maenads you'll meet possess at least some degree of psionic skill, and his chief is a skilled wilder.

As far as finding a guide to Vhem amongst his people, he can't think of anybody quite crazy enough to head in there. This is the closest inland he has been to the continent, and the only reason he came was in an attempt to rescue any crewmen of your boat before they got eaten alive by the bugs here.

They will sting you with paralytic poison and gnaw you to death slowly. In addition they secrete a strong anticoagulant from their mandibles and it prevents you from bleeding to death and it also amplifies your agony while they eat you alive.

Getting killed by most of the Vhem is a fate worse than death and I try to help whenever I can.

Our tribes do not war with one another, however there is a strong sense of competition. We meet twice a year and participate in great hunts of the nastier sea beasts in the area (not Vhem Wyrms!) and our elders hold council then. Our tribes sometimes consist of humans and rarer other races that we rescue or come to learn Psionic arts from us. In maenad society the easiest path to success is to contribute something to the group. (They are a very socialist people) A small gift of food, an offering of a weapon or tool, or even a grand story around the fire will cement your good will with my people. Never refuse a gift at the time that it is given, it is a terrible insult that brings dishonor and shame to the giver. If you truly do not want what is given, return it in private politely.

The maenads remain in this area for two reasons, one being that it is our ancestral lands. My people once lived in thriving metropolis's like the ones on Primael, but long before the Vhem came, a great cataclysm occurred that sank most of our nation beneath the sea. Great ruins and our legendary Maenad Monoliths surround the great northern archipelago. The Monoliths sprout lesser crystal patches that we farm around them. The fragments contain great psionic power, and the Monoliths themselves resonate with powerful energy that keeps all but the strongest of Vhem Wyrms from crossing the threshold. The second reason that the maenads remain is that our chained will feel a great and supernatural longing for the archipelago if they are gone for more than year. This place seems to provide spiritual sustenance for my people and the longings for it amongst our chained are unbearable.

Well that is pretty much all he can think of as far a specifics go, they have their own holidays and traditions and such, however they change from tribe to tribe and it would take you weeks to learn the rituals and slang of the maenad people, pretty much everything else you'll have to learn through observation of their culture first hand.

Also each tribe has its own heroes, some chained and other not, but he strongly doubts that there are any willing adventurers ready to explore the continent of chaos.

I can do a Saturday or Sunday session at any time.  (Sorry other 3.5 group at MGA, but this is the one campaign I can't miss a session for.)

I need someone to drive me over to CP's house.  I live in Houck House on North Campus.

Homework:
It looks like I should take the team leadership role, then.  Something tells me I'm going to have to pound on the table a little more to get folks' attention, though.  *wham*  "Listen up, folks."

The team name should be snappy and possibly rhyming or alliterative. (eg. "Tagon's Toughs" or "Pranger's Bangers"  Yeah, I've got Schlock Mercenary on the brain right now.  Apparently, it overwrote portions of my brain used for integral calculus shortly after my midterm.)

Since we trust Serena, we probably should give her back her dagger.  After all, these waters are a dangerous place, and she needs some sort of tool for cutting, digging, prying, and pounding underwater.  (Like a SCUBA diver.  You rarely go on a dive without your dive knife.  It's a mediocre weapon but an incredibly useful simple tool.)

(OOC: Hrrm, he refused our offer of money...)

Do the Maenads object to help getting the crystals, and how deep under water are they found (or are they found under as well as above, or just above)?

I'll offer any assistance I can to help Liem, and tell him I owe him a debt that he may call on whenever he sees me.

so, are we having a weekend session or not?

i request to go ashore briefly, and once on land, i take a clear glass vial from the magic component crate, dump out whatever contents are in it, and fill it with soil. i then put the vial into my bag, climb back aboard the boat and state that i'm done here and we can continue.

Tommorow I could play tommorow if people want. I want everyone to be there though including our new guy (tom) who I don't see on the boards yet, and whitney.

tell me what you think
-Fred

ps. In response to jims question about the monoliths crystal farms, the maenads frown on people swiping their heritage. sorry...
