If you haven't played it yet, try out the free versions of the old text adventure games Zork.

You can get a nicer interface for those games by running the data/zork.dat file through another program.  I like Gargoyle.

There's also the new online game. It's one of those games you can play for free, but if you want to play a lot or advance faster, you have to buy (with real money) extra action points. So far it seems to live up to its claim of being an amusing diversion not to be take too seriously.

How do you get Gargolye to do that?  It wouldn't work for me.  Also, I hate the way I have to fish for commands to do things.

fight troll
kill troll
kill troll with sword
kill troll with fish
give sack to troll
give sack troll
eat sack
eat fish
give fish to penguin

My 11 year-old daughter told me the other day she wants to learn how to write computer games. I told her that she should learn just like I did, which was to write text adventures in BASIC. I've got a copy of the book I learned from. I showed her Frotz running Zork on my iPod Touch and it took about an hour to get it back from her. She now wants to make a game like that, so I guess I've found our winter project together.

The great thing about Frotz in the iPhone/iPod Touch is that you can download from the game repository as required. And sometimes it's nice to take a break from all the other games I've got on there.

I think you can also get source for some version of EnvyMUD online.

Just a wee bit too advanced for her. Need to teach her all about variables and arrays first. Although I'm leaning towards using TADs, as it's got a nice object implementation and is really easy to program in.

There’s always Python, which has the benefit of being a real programming language that is used in many commercial games.

Absolutely, and I've programmed in Python for years. Just never quite got around to writing an IF engine with it. Would be fun to attempt though, if I get time.

huh.

One of my co-workers got a basic programming language for his 9 year old son. it's called "Scratch". It's designed specifically for kids to use. here's a link:
