Indie and other new RPGs
« on: October 03, 2008, 01:45:57 PM »
Ideally, I would like a small-ish group (3-5 plus me) for Saturday games which would rotate between several or many different games and GMs.  I am primarily interested in indie games, but will play pretty much anything new at least once.

Games I own and would run include:

Dogs in the Vineyard (you play virgin mormon lawkeepers in the wild west, where your word is doctrine, basically)
Dread (horror game with Jenga--it is awesome, trust me)
With Great Power (super hero game with very open character creation and focusing on having a comic book-like plot structure)
A fairy tale game whatever mechanic we decide (I have Zorcerer of Zo but am unimpressed with the generic system used there)
Best Friends (cute one-shot sorta game, you play girls who are "best friends" and constantly trying to screw each other over)
Buffy
Witchcraft (Both eden studios unisystem; NOT the same as the serenity system)
Kill Puppies for Satan (it is exactly what it sounds like)

I can also borrow pretty much any other indie game in existence with a month or so of notice, if there's something you've heard about and are interested in.  (Seriously.  Between us my husband, one of his friends, and I own pretty much every book sold by IPR (indie press revolution).)  Some highlights include Sorcerer, Capes, Burning Wheel, Burning Empire, octaNe, Spirit of the Century, Riddle of Steel (the only RPG endorsed by ARMA--take from that what you will; it is NOT just complicated realistic medieval combat simulation, though, there are good social mechanics as well), some crazy Mech game they love and I haven't played yet, and the list goes on.  And on.

Anyway, the only campaigns I would really want to run is Dogs in the Vineyard (maybe 6-8 sessions), fairy tale setting game, or maybe With Great Power.  I would much prefer a group that pretty much does new stuff every week.

OOOOHHHHH!!! DitV! DitV!

Dogs in the Vineyard is SO much fun.

the only really memorable character I've played for that was a Bible Thumper. He Thumped people with his Bible. SO MUCH FUN.

I don't really want to run more than 6 or so sessions at a time of DitV, because it seems to start to go downhill at that point (and even the book recommends retiring characters pretty quickly).

But that doesn't mean we couldn't start over with new characters after a short break.

oh, yes. New characters are fine.

I was just providing an AWESOME example of what you can do.

Oh yeah.  I was just clarifying that I don't want an indefinite campaign of Dogs.

Tip to people who want to play DitV: read this book.

I would be down for smthng...my schedule this year sucks a lot less than last year, so I can get in the group better...

also Darla...What ever happened to that Serenity game...does it still occur/is there a chance it could reoccur?

I just finished watching Firefly/Serenity and have an extreme feeling of regret that I didnt get into that game better last year...and a full understanding of why every single one of you hated me -_-

I don't think anyone HATED you.  :)

No, there's no more Serenity game.  Jeremy (who was running it) has moved out of Columbus.  I own the book, but honestly, I think it's an extremely poorly written and edited book and bad system, so I will probably sell the book.  If I were to play another Firefly universe game, I think I would use another system (though I would have to think a lot about what system is appropriate; none immediately comes to mind).

Also, I think you would probably like dogs in the vineyard.  We should try to get another player and schedule it for some other day.

Sure thing. I'm free Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday currently, though my work schedule may be changing soon-ish, but shouldn't be an issue.

Josh was interested in playing Dogs and perhaps some other stuff, so I think we have enough players.  I forgot to ask him if sundays would work though... Josh?

I could also probably do Tuesday or Thursday night.  I can change my schedule if necessary.

No no.  I won't be ready tomorrow.  Maybe next weekend if people have time?

Oh.  I just realized I'm supposed to be out of town next weekend.  How do you guys feel about Tuesday evening?  (Starting Tuesday the 21st, a week from this tuesday.)
