Fairhaven, Aundair - 23 Barrakas
« on: April 20, 2008, 01:26:34 PM »
Dawn breaks over the city of Fairhaven on this, the 23rd day of Barrakas.  The cries of the street vendors and the hustle & bustle of the awakening city create a din outside the Cannith regional house.  Inside, however, all is quiet; after a quick search of the house, you realize that your hosts are nowhere to be found...

This can't be good. Alroc cocks his head to see if he can hear anything in the building.

The soft clink of dishes in the kitchen, the quiet murmur of your companions' voices, the typical noises of a household beginning the day greet you from near the front of the house.  From further down the hallway you hear a low wooshing sound.  Upon investigating, you determine that the noise is coming from the seneschal's office; however, the door is locked.

Inconvenience. Alroc initiates Tactical Strike and bashes the lock with his adamantine slam. (Max damage is assumed, 20dmg ignoring all material adamantine and lower. Will continue to slam for 8dmg per hit until destroyed.)

One can only imagine what your hosts will think when they return from their errands and find that you've destroyed their property.

You peer in through the splintered remains of the wooden door.  The office is as tidy as the night before - the only difference is the lack of any occupant.  The seneschal's correspondence box is on his desk, lid open.  On the wall is a finely detailed tapestry depicting a forest scene with a mountain peak rising from the mist.  The noise is louder now, and definitely coming from the tapestry (which, incidentally, is billowing gently with the wind).

(retcon: the Aereni shaper never existed, and the Aereni archer is known as Kundari, who has a jaguar companion named Kaji.)

Kundari silently goes through the building looking for any signs of struggle, tracks, or things out of place. Kaji treads softly behind him, senses alert.

Kaji listen, spot checks = 26, 16 http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/1572012/

Why the locked door? It wouldn't kill you to put up a sign or a marker. Alroc steadily approaches and lifts open the tapestry while saying this.

Alroc: You feel a gentle warmth suffuse your being upon contact with the tapestry.  Behind the tapestry is a bare wall of aged ironwood paneling, indistinguishable from that which walls the rest of the room.  Closer to the tapestry now, you see that you were mistaken - the tapestry isn't billowing, the trees in the tapestry are swaying as if in a breeze.

Kundari: There are no signs of foul play, everything seems to be in its place.  A few moments of searching reveals a small card under a table in the hallway, possibly where it was blown by the rush of wind through the demolished door.  Written in a flowing hand and elegant script, the card reads: Honored guests-
My duties to the House require my presence elsewhere for a time.  Avail yourselves of House Cannith's hospitality as long as required to prepare for your next recovery mission.  Any area of the house is open to you (save the steward's and my offices, of course).  I do hope your consultation with our Seer was informative, and I wish you the best of luck in accomplishing your mission and fulfilling our contract.
Regards,
Selmac d'Cannith

Kundari picks up the letter, walks back to the seneschal's office, looks down at the splintered remains of the door, steps lightly over them, and hands the letter to Alroc. I don't have much respect for House Cannith, but you could stand to be a bit more subtle. Kundari looks at the tapestry, and the trees swaying as if in a breeze (Knowledge Arcana taking 10 = 18). Interesting. Kundari walks over to Selmac d'Cannith's desk and searches it for any interesting documents. Search (1d20+9=22)

So they did leave a note. Oh well, they can charge me later. Alroc pays no mind to the swaying trees in the tapestry, he's not the biggest fan of magical effects in art. Or art for that matter.
Alroc looks around for a combat range, with an instructor of more experience than him
 if possible.

Knowledge arcana: You recall hearing about this sort of thing during the last days of the war.  Magical tapestries that allow instantaneous transportation to the location depicted.  There were some drawbacks that you can't quite remember - something about the "instantaneous" part.

Search: In the correspondence box on the desk, you find the typical documents associated with the business of a great House - bills and orders, contract proposals and requests for aid, and a myriad of other uninteresting items.  One letter, however, catches your eye: a much-wrinkled letter of soft parchment (it appears to have been crumpled and re-smoothed many times) bears the seal of Cannith's research division, as well as a personal seal that you don't recognize.  The letter is written in an encryption, but the signature is easily discernible - Mir. d'Cannith.

Alroc: You hear the unmistakable sounds of combat from somewhere nearby.  The thwack of broadcloth arrows smacking targets, the clash of steel on steel, and above it all the harsh shouts of a weapons master trying in vain to "make some sort of warrior out of these stupid sacks of puke".  Following your ... do warforged have ears? ... following your auditory sensory apparatus, you manage to locate the practice field and the weapons master.

Kundari looks closer at the letter, attempting to make some sense of the encryption Intelligence check (1d20+2=18).

The encryption is well beyond your ability to decipher.  However, you are able to determine that the script is an amalgam of draconic and the runic language of the titans (similar to the language of the giants), with a bit of something unidentifiable mixed in.

Kundari stuffs the encrypted letter into his pack, and leaves the office. He is already weary of this human city, and wishes to get back to his mission. He goes into the city, looking for where Alroc went, and to ask if he plans to continue north to the mountains in search of the next schema.

Alroc approaches the he weapon master in the range and inquires, Would it be possible for you to instruct me in combat when I have some spare time next? I am currently on a job that will take a bit of time to complete.
Kundari talks to Alroc. Ready, but what about everyone else? A leader with no company can be felled by a mob.
