D&D *books
« on: January 23, 2008, 10:08:19 PM »
As I mentioned here, I’m thinking of picking up some of the 3.5e splatbooks (and the Rules Compendium looks handy). Any recommendations/suggestions?

In order of stuff you need:
Tome of Battle: Book of Nine Swords

Dungeon Master's Guide II
Player's Handbook II
Second Generation Complete (Includes Mage, Scoundrel, and Champion)

Thanks for the list. :) Erk, a tanking class. Don’t think I'll be allowing PHB2. ;)

I picked up the Magic and Spell Compendiums, Complete Warrior, and Tome of Battle: Book of Nine Swords. Still plan on getting at least the Rule Compendium.

From what I've heard, The Rules Compendium isn't worth it for an experienced DM. Dungeon Master's Guide II would be a much better tool for a DM. It has a pre-made town and new options for challenges, information on race-crafted items, and a system for running a business.

My last serious attempt at running was more than four years ago, so I’m not exactly sure I’d call myself ‘experienced’ at this stage (especially with the various bits of new material that’s been released). :P

I would recommend all the completes (Mage, Warrior, Champion, Arcane, Divine, Scoundrel, and Adventurer)
and also the races (Stone, Destiny, and Wild)
the guidebooks (Defenders of the Faith, Masters of the Wild, Song and Silence, Sword and Fist, Tome and Blood)
Possibly Unearthed Arcana

The guidebooks take lowest priority, but deserve to be on the list if only because you might need to check your players' character sheets, and possibly to let them look through them for help.

I do not believe in using PHBII or DMGII, i like personalizing my own characters and cities, but if you are stressed for time, the city building can certainly help.

Also, I don't think anything below MM1 is needed, this may be because non of my campaigns hit above 10th level, before we hit a rut and can't meet together for awhile, and when we do no one remembers what happened so we start over. Or, this may be because I design my own monsters sometimes too. Again if you are stressed for time, the MM can be a real help, though do try to avoid randomly picking something from it for each encounter, especially if it's in the same dungeon, i try to vary the circumstances for the encounters inside a dungeon instead of the monsters.

If people want to comment on a general topic like “D&D splat books”, then it makes more sense to me to continue an older thread than it does to make a new one—especially when that thread is near the top of the list anyway.

I'd like to point out that Eldmor is a FERVENT supporter of Tome of Battle. While picking it up is not necessarily a bad idea, it shouldn't be on the short list of "must have" books for a new DM or new player.
