Call of Cthulu, nWoD Style
« on: December 02, 2007, 08:45:16 PM »
This idea was being thrown around at the last meeting and I see it as having a ton of potential.
I would never GM it, but it sounds awesome and I would be willing to help "fit" CoC in nWoD.

It doesn't take much; Intruders has all sorts of wonderful critters. Pitting a group of mortals against Second Sight, Predators, Book of Spirits, and Intruders is really all it takes.

I would recommend one thing: check out this thread.

Other than sanity, does nWoD need much modification to do CoC? Mortals are screwed against pretty much everything, and that fits CoC pretty well IIRC.

exactly - mortals are already all but powerless, so all thats really needed is sanity and a careful selection of opponents.

I'm thinking about running a 1920s Call of Cthulu game based on the World of Darkness rules.  Here's my thoughts so far:

Have a separate sanity stat that maxes out at your Morality.  If you witness (or do) horrible things, you make a sanity check that's like a degeneration roll based on how damaging the event would be to your sanity.  Having 0 willpower gives you a -1 penalty on the roll.  Each sanity level lost gives you a temporary derangement.

I haven't figured out a good way to recover sanity yet.

You can recover sanity in Call of Cthulu?

Well, in the Chaosium game, you can recover it by psychiatric treatment or by defeating horrible monsters.

Oh, I guess I tended to die before that happened.

yeah... I wouldn't bother making Recover Sanity rules complicated... as long as it takes some time and a peaceful environment, it'll never come up.

I'll have to figure out what do do with the computer skill too, either removing it or replacing it with something else.

Languages will be more important for reading ancient mystic texts and that sort of thing.  Is there anything else you think would be appropriate for the 1920s?

Giant robo mecha would be cool.

hmmm.... I just checked the Requiem for Rome character sheet, and there's nothing useful. Computer and Science were replaced with religion and Warfare, neither of which really helps.

Incidentally, Firearms and Drive were replaced by Archery and Ride.

Linguistics or Forbidden Lore.  Linguistics would involve understanding languages, as well as interpreting unknown texts, while Forbidden Lore would be like Occult, except it would make you insane.

Of the two, I'd pick Linguistics. It seems like a much better option than the stupid Languages Merit.

Plus, I don't see the point of having Forbidden Lore separated from Occult. As far as CoC is concerned, anything weird/occult/forbidden should drive you crazy. It's sorta the point, isn't it?

Actually, the forbidden lore thing makes sense, because regular occult stuff didn't drive you insane, but the mythos lore did.  I'm not sure if I like that mechanic though.

Linguistics would replace the need for all the investigators to take merit dots in ancient Sumerian.

Randy can put his points into giant robo mecha, but I don't think it'll come up.  Might be good against a nightgaunt though.
