Preface: Wrangling on the Plains
« on: December 01, 2007, 03:37:52 AM »
You wake up in your home village of Iwagakure, the largest of all shinobi villages. It's clear outside and the bright sun is already warming the air. You were given notice that you would be assigned to a Genin cell to carry out missions for the village his summer. Fresh from the academy or the grasp of your mentors, you set to serve Iwagakure and be the best ninja you can be.
You receive a letter that's been dropped in your respective mailboxes. It reads as follows in very poor chicken scratches:

Genin- Mission on the first day! I wont be able to see youre faces do to some problems Ive been having at my residense. Report too Flat Rock Ranch at noon and meet the owner to recieve your mission.

The note is riddled with spelling mistakes and has stains from what seems to be a trickle of blood. [If you have ranks in Survival, DC10 to recognize.] The seal of Iwagakure is on the envelope, proving its legitimacy. You have a couple hours of preparation time before heading to the ranch.

Tsubaki Hayashi wakes up at 7 o'clock on a beautiful summer morning. Her older sister, not the morning person Tsubaki is, is still fast asleep. Tsubaki quietly changes into her favorite outfit: a red tank top, black pants, and finally, a green jacket with a sakura flower on the back. She goes downstairs to get breakfast. The Hayashis are fairly wealthy so their kitchen, as well as the rest of the rooms, are fairly large. Tsubaki makes herself some toast and cereal. While she is eating her breakfast, her mother comes in the kitchen with the mail.

"Tsubaki, there's a letter for you," said her mother.

"Thank you, Mother," said Tsubaki. She opened the letter. She sees that the letter is stained. "Is that...blood?" Tsubaki wondered aloud.

[Survival Check for Blood (1d20+3=23)]

"It is! I hope whoever wrote this letter is ok. I've got to go, Mother! Whoever this is might be in trouble."

"Good luck, my daughter, and don't forget what I've taught you," Tsubaki's mother said, hugging her daughter.

"I won't. Bye!" And with that, the young medical-ninja-in-training left to her first mission.

Samanoske Akira leaps out of bed shouting, "Oh crap, crap, crap, crap, crap," and dashes out of the house, having overslept just past noon. He leaves the house with a piece of toast in his mouth and the uniform he was still wearing when he fell asleep the previous night while playing with his army men. Even though he's only twelve, Samanoske is living along right now because both of his parents are out of town on business.

On the way out, Samanoske grabs the mail and thumbs through it. Most of it is junk, which he just tosses away, but he finds the peculiar and stops to read it. "Hoo-ray, my first mission!," he exclaims before noticing that he is still late.

"Oh no, I'm still late!" he sighs with exasperation as he turns to run the other direction towards Flat Rock Ranch.

Tsubaki:
As you approach the ranch, the ground seems to flatten out and become mildly grassy. A large classically-built wooden building stands adjacent to a large wooden fence with darkly colored cows presiding in it. A woman wearing peasant rags and a large straw hat takes a break from feeding the cows and hops over the fence to you. "All right, I knew there were supposed to be more than one of you," the woman says in mild disgust. She has mildly dark skin with dirt brown eyes to match. Her body is littered with scrapes and bruises from a life working on a ranch.
"I better 'ell you what you nee' to do while the slowpokes catch up. Ma prize cow has escaped to the plain-lands! I'm 'orry to bore you ninja with this, but I just can't take time out to go track down Burta! I was barely able to rig the fence she 'roke..... who's 'at?" She looks intently in the direction of the village as a person seems to be sprinting toward the ranch with what seems to be a piece of toast in their mouth.

Tsubaki pulls out her letter and shows it to the woman. "Excuse me, ma'am? I received this letter from our chuunin. It seems to be splattered with cow's blood. Was your Burta somehow injured?"

Akira finishes off his toast as he approaches the ranch and waves his arms at the two people talking by the fence.

"'here's a chance she might 'ave!" the woman responded to Tsubaki. "I 'ee 'omeone else is 'ere. I'll give you some stuff to go fetch her with right quick." She leads the both of you toward a small shed and hands you both a comically large bell and a bale of green hay. "'ll animals love food and are intrigued by noise, so 'ere you both go." The bale weighs significantly heavier than expected and he bell is extremely unwieldy.

Tsubaki puts down her heavy load and turns to the other ninja. "You must be one of the other genin. Hello, I'm Tsubaki of the Hayashi clan. I'm training to be a great medical ninja. And you are?"

Hi, I’m Samanoske Akira. I’m studying at the academy to be a ninja ’cause ninjas are awesome,” Akira says with a grin on his face and one hand scratching the back of his head. “I’m really strong, so I should be able to carry these no problem.

As a demonstration, Akira then attempts to pick up both the bale of green hay and the comically large bell.

"Nuff talking! Get my Burta out of danger!" she said, obviously hurrying the ninja.
You go out onto the plains and see the tall, craggy mountains dotting the horizon. If Bura somehow managed to go near the mountains, she'd be cougar feed.
[Roll Spot against DC5 to see Burta while searching the plains.]

[Spot Check For Burta (1d20+3=7)]

"Look, Akira, Burta is on that small hill over there. And the poor thing looks hurt." Tsubaki pulls out her letter. "See these splatters? It's cow's blood. This is what our chuunin wants us to do. To heal the cow and save her from predators."

Spot check DC20 to see Bruta (1d20=20)

Akira shades his eyes and peers off in the distance and exclaims, “Yes! There he is. We better ring the bell to call him over.” Looking at the Tsubaki’s letter, Akira nods in agreement.

I’ll ring the bell to call him over, and you can heal him while he eats the hay,” Akira says as he grabs the bell and shakes it furiously.

Akira furiously shakes the bell to hear it unceremoniously make a racket. The cow perks up to hear the nuisance and slowly trots over to him. She gives a slightly confused look at the bright yellow bell. "Mooo."

[Treat Injury Check for Burta (1d20+7=11)]

While the cow munches on the hay, Tsubaki bandages up the wounds. Burta can now walk normally. "There you go. All better now." She smiles and pets Burta.

If cows could smile, this one would. She moos happily and continues to go all domo-kun on the hay. Unfortunately, any attempt to persuade her from the bale seems futile. Guess you'll have to lure her back using the bale as bait.
