Character Backstory
« on: October 21, 2007, 03:41:52 PM »
Cato lived a less than normal life. He always felt a looming wherever he went and thought it might be something he did wrong in life. Then again, he was bullied growing up, dropped out of high school, and is now a vagabond, living the streets. That was just a feeling he had, though, and it quickly passed.
Cato's master found him when he was down on his luck and was then living in an alley behind a club. She asked him if he had felt any odd presences around him lately. Cato recognized this and quickly deduced this was the person watching him. Cato then began to Awaken. Cato felt the woman saying that through living such a chaotic life, he had jostled his potential to manipulate what is definite. He barely opened his eyes to see the riverstone set in his necklace briefly light up with a white aura. Smething not of his world was going on, he thought to himself.
Cato spent the next few months consulting Estwynn, the name of his master, on what exactly had happened and what this meant for him now. He was told of the different realms, and of the orders, and politics, and blahblahblah. Cato barely retained any of this, although he took quickly to High Speech.
Cato was then sent to work as a bartender at Club Magnus. He has no reason why, or he more likely forgot why or he ignored it. It was money, and he had a place to crash now.

Rem enjoyed his job at the DA's office, but he didn't enjoy the tight reign his superiors applied to him.  After discussing his displeasure with them, he decided he would have to go into independent investigation.

On a missing persons case, with finances low and working with two hours sleep and a hangover, Rem was shot.  This wouldn't have been unusual, except for the fact that the bullet stopped in midair about six inches from his chest.  In fact, everything stopped.  Thinking quickly (in fact, relatively speaking, thinking faster than he ever had in his life), he moved to the side and shot his assailant.  Time snapped back into joint.  After calling the police and enduring another pointless questioning, he went home and had the most lucid and strange dream, writing his name in stone in a bizarre world.

Soon after that, he got a message from a man calling himself The Brain.  The Brain seemed to know things he couldn't know, about him and about what happened to him that day.  Rem didn't know quite what to think, but he knew that he was on to something big, and he couldn't just walk away from this strange world he had been thrust into.  Rem is now The Eye.

You don't have to use that as your shadow name, but it is what Brain will call refer to you as.  As far as your GoV indoctrination goes: has your character killed for the order yet (or at least thought that he was killing for the order)?

It's a good shadow name, I might as well use it.

In terms of the Guardians, it could be either way. How much of time between Awakening and the start of the chronicle are you expecting?  If you have something that meshes well with the plot you're planning, I'd be open to suggestions.

Background: Mr. Jim (as he is known to his callers) was born on August 9, 1974. An only child, Mr. Jim was pampered by his parents. They would buy him whatever he wanted and would play an audience to the outrageous stories he told. He learned a lot about public speaking from his father, who was a motivational speaker. The skills he learned helped Mr. Jim out a lot at his first summer job working for the Happy Funtime Psychic Network, a non-defunct psychic phone network. Everything was going great for Mr. Jim, but that was about to end.

Mr. Jim’s father had been out of the country giving motivational speeches in Europe and was due to return home in time for Chistmas that year. However, he never returned home. When Mr. Jim’s mother found out that the flight on which his father was scheduled to return had been blown up by terrorists, she was overwelmed by grief. Mr. Jim’s mother spent the rest of her days drinking heavily until her death on June 15, 1992 when she went out for a drive and crashed into a gas station.

When Mr. Jim graduated from high school, he moved out to the big city. Since his mother had spent all their money on booze, he was unable to go to college. Instead, he took whatever odd jobs he could find that would pay the bills. He worked hard and manipulated the system whenever he could (using the speaking skills he got from his father). After a decade, Mr. Jim was finally able to set up a psychic hotline (for entertainment purposes only) of his very own. He was a persuaive and convincing guy, and people would call him (at $16.18/minute) to have their problems solved, ghosts exorcised, and so on.

His business did well at first (and he even became a minor celebrity with his zany radio ads), but it starting having financial difficulties. He had developed a ‘knack’ for retaining callers for long periods of time, but this was causing a lot of static because people didn’t like paying those huge bills. It was at this time, a few months ago, that Mr. Jim experienced what he believed to be an incredibly strange dream. In it, he was greated by a talking hat. Now, it didn’t really talk, but instead made funny doot-doot noises whenever the top of the hat flapped. Mr. Jim was able to understand it perfectly. He picked up the object the hat excreted, placed it on a map of Cornwall, and proceded through the door behind it. When Mr. Jim awoke, he was holding a case containing a pair of sunglasses with dark, obsidian lenses. When he put them on, he could see the shadows ont he walls moving in new ways.

The next day, he received a call from a man speaking in a calm and measured voice who called himself The Agent. This man offered Mr. Jim a position at his nightclub, and in exchange for doing this work, The Agent would reveal to Mr. Jim what he knew about the minds of men and the world around them.

If you are doing real missions for the order, then you must have passed their tests.  Otherwise, your master will be testing you as the chronicle progresses.  It's up to you, but remember that if you fail then you might get booted out or worse.

Well, I took a dot of status in the Guardians, so I'm officially a member of the order, whatever that means.

Something tells me that you might end up getting a rather strange twilight familiar at some point, Randy.

Well, have you ever seen those creepy puppets from that one kid's show?  Imagine one of them as a twilight familiar.

When I was working on my character, I suggested to Thomas that I should take a four dot familiar merit and make it a talking hat. While I did decide against taking the familiar at the time, I thought I could still use it by giving it a home in Pandemonium.

By the way, can you tell me a little bit more about the Agent?  I have no idea what any of his motivations are.  The same goes for the masters of David and Brennan.
