Background: Mr. Jim (as he is known to his callers) was born on August 9, 1974. An only child, Mr. Jim was pampered by his parents. They would buy him whatever he wanted and would play an audience to the outrageous stories he told. He learned a lot about public speaking from his father, who was a motivational speaker. The skills he learned helped Mr. Jim out a lot at his first summer job working for the Happy Funtime Psychic Network, a non-defunct psychic phone network. Everything was going great for Mr. Jim, but that was about to end.
Mr. Jim’s father had been out of the country giving motivational speeches in Europe and was due to return home in time for Chistmas that year. However, he never returned home. When Mr. Jim’s mother found out that the flight on which his father was scheduled to return had been blown up by terrorists, she was overwelmed by grief. Mr. Jim’s mother spent the rest of her days drinking heavily until her death on June 15, 1992 when she went out for a drive and crashed into a gas station.
When Mr. Jim graduated from high school, he moved out to the big city. Since his mother had spent all their money on booze, he was unable to go to college. Instead, he took whatever odd jobs he could find that would pay the bills. He worked hard and manipulated the system whenever he could (using the speaking skills he got from his father). After a decade, Mr. Jim was finally able to set up a psychic hotline (for entertainment purposes only) of his very own. He was a persuaive and convincing guy, and people would call him (at $16.18/minute) to have their problems solved, ghosts exorcised, and so on.
His business did well at first (and he even became a minor celebrity with his zany radio ads), but it starting having financial difficulties. He had developed a ‘knack’ for retaining callers for long periods of time, but this was causing a lot of static because people didn’t like paying those huge bills. It was at this time, a few months ago, that Mr. Jim experienced what he believed to be an incredibly strange dream. In it, he was greated by a talking hat. Now, it didn’t really talk, but instead made funny doot-doot noises whenever the top of the hat flapped. Mr. Jim was able to understand it perfectly. He picked up the object the hat excreted, placed it on a map of Cornwall, and proceded through the door behind it. When Mr. Jim awoke, he was holding a case containing a pair of sunglasses with dark, obsidian lenses. When he put them on, he could see the shadows ont he walls moving in new ways.
The next day, he received a call from a man speaking in a calm and measured voice who called himself The Agent. This man offered Mr. Jim a position at his nightclub, and in exchange for doing this work, The Agent would reveal to Mr. Jim what he knew about the minds of men and the world around them.
