Character Sketch for Adamant Bell
« on: July 16, 2007, 12:08:43 PM »
Name: Adamant Bell (this is his post-Exaltation sobriquet; he does not go by this yet)

Caste: Eclipse

Totemic Anima Banner: A giant bell that bobs and rings as he moves and swings his weapon

Origin: The Realm/House Mnemon/The Immaculate Order

History: Mnemon Rethay spent his early life in school, growing up as a son of the great sorceress Mnemon, leader of the great house of the same name.  The blood of the dragons was strong with him; so much so that he experienced some of the dragon's blessings long before the usual time when a terrestrial exaltation would have been expected.  But the years went on, he trained as a Dynast, and he passed his twentieth birthday without ever receiving the blessing that just fifteen years before had seemed a foregone conclusion.

Rethay had disappointed everyone: his mother, his great house, and especially himself.  After a bit of soul-searching, he decided to join the Immaculate Order, where he might learn why the dragons had so denied him.  His ambition was unmatched, even by the vastly more powerful dragon-bloods: Rethay managed not only to awaken his essence, but to attain the unheard of heights (for an unexalted mortal) of starting to learn a Celestial martial art within a few years of joining the order (which would be extremely good even for a dragon blooded).  He was sent into the Threshold to support the Order and the Realm in Greyfalls.

What the Order didn't know is that Rethay had found the answers he sought soon after joining: the Unconquered Sun had chosen him as one of his heroes.  Rethay stayed on in the Order, sure that any day he would be killed as Anathema.  He was careful to never reveal his Anima, and somehow (with the help of a certain Gold Faction spymaster) he managed to remain undercover.  His relief was great when he was sent out of the Realm; he now serves as a spy in Greyfalls for his sifu.

Motivation: To peacefully reconcile the Realm (or at least House Mnemon) with the Solar Exalted.

Intimacies: Rethay does not wish to betray the Realm, even though he would be hunted as a demon if anyone found out his true nature.  Rethay respects the lifestyles of mortal Immaculate monks, even though he thinks they are misguided.  Rethay will not allow his monk's robes to be damaged.  Rethay cannot stand to see innocents harmed over questions of religious dogma.

Backgrounds: Adamant Bell has a Sidereal Sifu(3), some pull with the Cult of the Illuminated(1 or 2), as well as a small amount of income (Resources 1) from the same.  He has won over a few mortal monks with his skill and charisma (Followers 2), and they would follow him even if his status as one of the Unconquered Sun's chosen were revealed.

Abilities:  Adamant Bell knows a Celestial martial art.  The Earth Dragon style would be most appropriate, provided that is allowed (I have a list of prerequisites for the charms of this style; the charms themselves are given in the storyteller's guide).

Future development: Adamant Bell will probably be outed as a Solar early on, but he should eventually convince a number of dragon-bloods to follow (or at least accept) him.  Members of the Immaculate Order will react strongly to him, one way or another, for wielding their sacred and secret arts.  They may see him as a pious Anathema striving to overcome his dread curse, a horrible corrupter who profanes the holy dragons with every move he makes, a test to see if the Order really acts as the Immaculate Dragons wish, etc.

Other details:  Rethay is out of contact with his family.  If he could somehow convince Mnemon to accept him, he would become wrapped up in very complicated power politics.  On one hand, this would give him access to great wealth and resources.  On the other hand, his relatives would likely seek to control him, possibly blackmailing him.

By the way, this is intended to be the "tetsubo Eclipse with social capabilities" for Rob.

Here is an alternative concept: http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f160/Naira88/1183230075985.gif

I like it.

But maybe his nickname should be Art and he should have a strong belief in flying saucers.

Yeah, it seems fine to me. You'll have to show me the martial art, but I doubt it'd be utterly ridiculous. I'd definitely like to know what Rob thinks of it though. :)

The charms for it are listed in that Storyteller's guide you have.  The only thing it doesn't say is what order they are in, but it sort of tells you what the first 3-5 are.  The prerequisites are sort of given there too; I can get a copy of the full charms from the DB source book though if you like.

Well, it sounds like a wonderful character, and I'm sure you'd enjoy playing it.

But it's not something I would have made, and it's not something I would have much fun playing.

I don't really know what to say, other than that. I appreciate the thought and effort.

You could say what kind of character you would like playing, offering me some constructive criticism instead of just rejecting my proposal.

Making a character in a game is a personal choice.  You gotta feel it.

Which I would gladly do, if I knew what I wanted to play. Unfortunately, I've had a rather hectic week, what with having to spend most of the day Sunday driving to a hot Aluminum Mill in Kentucky so we can be there first thing Monday morning, and working on a complicated piece of software that needs to be ready Monday morning, and having the software spec changed on me earlier today to something significantly mroe complicated, and having to work extra hard in order to be able to avodi going in to work on Saturday so I can game, I don't really have the time to provide a detailed outline of what I want my character to be.

But, obviously, you feel that's more important, so I guess i should quit my job so I can provide a detailed, step-by-step description of precisely what I did and did not like about the character you created for me without asking if I wanted you to do that first.

Mike, I don't care that you killed my character because, quite frankly, you didn't kill my character - I chose to have him die. I did this because he wasn't any fun.Your actions were just a convenient way of removing him.

If you really want some criticism, here's a couple problems off of the top of my head:

Firstly, you didn't ask me if I wanted you to create my character's back story or choose my charms for me. This is the big one. You did offer to help, but that's not what you actually did.

Secondly, I don't like the idea of using charms that I have never seen, have no idea what they do, and can't read about unless we're gaming.

...

There are others, but I need time to put them into words, and I don't have any to spare.

I wrote specifics because that's how I tend to think.  You can take whatever you like from what I wrote if you like any of it at all.  I also didn't know that you had to work a stupid amount this week, and I didn't know I was stressing you out by trying to help you.  I never intended to have you quit your job and I am sorry if you did quit it over this.

Whoa, what happened after I left?  Anyone care to post a short synopsis?  Is that raven kid still passed out?  I strangled him mucho.

I'll just give you a synopsis of what happened after you left. :) After you left, the group eventually killed Son of Crows. He had started to come to because they ghosts were sacraficing themselves at a rather terrible looking altar, and the group took offense to his calling them food.

After trying (and failing) to escort the ghosts out of Smert, Golden Pike and Flying Shadow were approached by Princess Magnificent with Lips of Coral and Robes of Black Feathers (i.e. a Deathlord). She offered Golden Pike an army in exchange for finding a new Deathknight for her. You see, Son of Crows is rather crazy and pretty terrible at what he does. Neither of them would go for it, so they declined.

She later approached the group again with a similar offer (though this time only for a favor), but the group still refused. I imagine this was a hard decision for Golden Pike because around this time he learned of an Imperial army marching towards Great Forks from Grayfalls. After the encounter, the group returned to Great Forks to tell Shield of a Different Day what happened.

After hearing of the approaching army, Shield of a Different Day gave the group two options: find a way to defeat the army, or go with any other exalts† in the city to slow the enemy down until reinforcements arrive. When Flax refused to take everyone to scout out the enemy at that very moment, Golden Pike limit broke and tried to smack some sense into Flax. While Flax ran, Flying Shadow attempted to use lethal force on Golden Pike to subdue him. Perceiving this as a threat on his life, Golden Pike responded in kind and cut Flying Shadow in twain.

That's pretty much where we stopped. Hopefully, it makes some sense.

†I know I said "god-blooded" last week. I meant exalted. For some reason I mixed up the two.

Limit Breaks are fun, aren't they?

Do deathlords do more than offer business transactions?  I'm surprised only one person died.
